Traditional Intermediate Hard Metal Craft (a City & Guilds Accredited Programme)

This course is the natural progression for those who have completed the Basic Hard Metal Craft course and want to gain a further recognized qualification in hard metalwork.

It has been developed for those who want to acquire the skills for working with hard metal and the knowledge of the design, repair and maintenance of hard metals used in roofing, cladding and weathering applications.

Tier 3 grant will be paid on successful completion of each of the four modules within this course.

The course is split into four modules which can be taken individually or in sequence. The four modules will take 40 days to complete. The learning outcome for each module are:

Module 1 Inc Assessment
  • Soldered joints
  • External corner soldered (2 versions)
  • Double lock welt and Double standing seam
  • Reverse Expansion Joint
  • Hard Metal Soakers and Step Flashing
  • Front Apron soldered and welted
  • Back gutter soldered and welted
  • Flash a chimney
  • Ridge Flashing welted
  • Hard metal slate welted/soldered/riveted
  • Clipping for Hard Metals sliding clips + fixed clips
  • Standing seam finishing at vertical upstand
  • Standing seam to vert. upstand (Angle fillet meth.)
  • Internal corner standing seam

  • Parapet Wall Capping
  • Welted Cornice
  • Welted Box Outlet
  • Welted Gutter Chute Outlet
  • Box Gutter Drip soldered
  • Drip Edge
Module 3 Inc Assessment
  • Pike jaw fixing & soldered cap end for batten roll
  • Flat vented roof
  • Ventilation detail
  • Standing seam in to a hip
  • Hard Metal valley up to 10 degree pitch
  • Hard Metal valley up to 25 degrees
  • Standing seam welted end
  • Standing seam at vertical upstand
  • Verge detail
Module 4 Inc Assessment
  • Vertical wall covering with window
  • Hard Metal cladding
  • Hard Metal shingles
  • Dormer with standing seams

As candidates progress through the modules each element is checked to ensure quality and conformity to specification and best practice.

Formal assessment is by both practical exercises and written questions/case studies. All work is assessed and marked against the criteria provided on the task sheets.
