This is an introductory course for those with little or no experience of leadwork. It covers basic bossing and welding, the two skills most commonly used by today’s leadworkers.
Bossing is the method used to shape and form lead sheet into complex shapes and joints without leaving tool marks or causing any significant reduction in the thickness of the metal. Welding is the alternative method for shaping lead and can also be used when sheets need to be joined together. Both methods must be achieved neatly and without compromising the weatherproofing quality of the installation. They demand a high degree of skill and knowledge.
This course has two parts , lead welding & bossing they can be delivered as a one week course or the course can be taken as two modular blocks each of three days. If the course is delivered in one week candidates are eligible to claim the completion grant of Tier 3 (£240 2024/25) and if taken separately they are eligible for Tier 2 (£140 in 2024/25).
Welding
Candidates will cover, and undertake:
- Butt Welding
- Lap Welding
- Cover Patch
- Fillet Welding
- Incline welding and gusset corner
- Pipe sleeve
- Front apron
- Welded back gutter
- Saddle flashings
Each element is checked to ensure quality and conformity to specification and best practice.
At the end of the Welding module, candidates are formally assessed on their fabrication of a Welded Back Gutter.
Bossing
Candidates will cover, and undertake:
- Half front apron
- Chute outlet
- Internal and External corners
Each element is checked to ensure quality and conformity to specification and best practice.
At the end of the Bossing module, candidates are formally assessed on forming a Bossed Back Gutter.
