Hard Metal training courses – copper, zinc and stainless steel


Rolled Lead SheetAs well as training in the use of lead, the LSA’s training expertise also extends to courses in hard metals. Training takes places at our unique Training Centre based in Kent, with our highly qualified tutors and where everything is provided for you apart from safety boots and overalls.

LSA courses are flexible and designed to work around an individual’s circumstances and work commitments and support and advice on accessing funding is also available.

Courses range from the basic to more specialist. LSA staff are happy to help identify the best course for your needs but this provides a brief overview to show the options available.

1. Basic, intermediate and advanced skills in hard metals

These short courses last five days and provide an introduction to the skills needed for working with hard metals, and move up to intermediate and more advanced skills.
These courses are beneficial to leadworkers, roofers and general building contractors who want to become more skilled in the prefabrication and installation of typical hard metal details.

2. Specialist Apprentice Programme

A two-year course resulting in QCF Level 2, with the option to attain Level 3 with an additional year.

The course includes a combination of formal instruction in the LSA training centre coupled with on-site training with an employer where the final assessment and knowledge of the participant will be carried out.

The course is designed to ensure those taking part are able to understand the hazards and safe working practices within this specialised industry and after the training will be able to form and install metal flashings, weatherings and roof details to a variety of roof finished to meet recognised practice and standards of competence.

3. On Site Assessment and Training (OSAT)

This approach provides the necessary on-site assessment and training required to achieve a nationally recognised QCF Level 2/3 Roofing (Lead and Hard Metals).

It is aimed at experienced leadworkers wishing to gain the Roofing QCF Level 2/3 (Lead and Hard Metals).

As the process is carried out on site it reduces time away from the workplace.
Training is also aimed at areas where there are skill gaps.
It entails up to three site visits by our assessor.
