This course is designed for those with little or no experience of working with lead sheet. This course is mainly practical and gives an introduction to the skills required for working with lead sheet and will allow candidates to develop competence in
- Bossing lead sheet details, to include internal and external corners.
- Aspects of health and safety.
The technical term boss was used in the Middle Ages to describe the beating out of metals into shapes. Bossing in this sense came to be applied to the general shaping of malleable metals. Leadworkers now use the term to describe the shaping of lead sheet with hardwood and plastic hand tools.
This course will give the opportunity for a real hands on experience where you will discover how lead sheet can be manipulated and formed to a variety of shapes used in roofing applications by using hand tools, and using hot and cold working techniques.
Who should attend?
While there are no special entry requirements this course would be useful for roofing and building contractors who want to become more skilled in the prefabrication and installation of typical lead flashing details.
Although a relatively simple technique to learn in its basic form, experts practice and develop their skill to such an extent that the most complex shapes can be drawn out of a flat sheet without even leaving a tool mark on the surface of the metal and without any significant reduction to its original thickness. You or your staff will gain skills and knowledge of lead bossing and how to manipulate lead sheet, there-by improving the quality of leadwork and productivity on site.
